PDFing Word docs in Russian

I have been trying to PDF some Word documents created in Russian. The resulting PDF file is terribly slow in painting the screen once opened. You can see my problem if you try to open the following document at http://www.who.dk/ch/pha/Nis/Reform/viennaviennarus.pdf.
I'm using Acrobat Distiller 4.0 and opening the document in Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0. My target group are probably using Reader 3.0. The document was created in Word 2000 and looks just fine in that format.

I would venture to say that the reason you get such a big download time is that the PDF you are creating is not being created as text, but as JPG's.  In other words, distiller might not recognize the russian text as actual text (probably only sees english as text)so it interperets each full page as a JPG rather than text.

The resulting file would be rather large, as JPG's are much larger than just text.

Your PDF file is converting the fonts into bitmap images, thus loading EXTREMELY slow.

To fix this, you have to embed the Cyrillic font you are using into the PDF document - this is how you do it:

Change Acrobat Distiller's job options to embed the fonts you want to use:

1. Choose Settings > Job Options.
2. Click the Fonts tab.
3. Select the Embed All Fonts option. 4. Click OK.
5. Distill the PostScript file again.

Hope this helps!
