i've got a copy of cd written by chinese version window 98.  on my english window 98, i could only see some garbage and i got file system error (1026) every time i tried to do with the files on that cd (couldn't copy, read etc).

however, i could read it with chinese window 98 installed on my system.  but i don't want to do that just to hear some mp3s.  i don't need to know what's the song's title.  just listen randomly.

so do you have any idea, ie how to read these "specially" encoded filename in english win98?

You are going to have to add the international info for chinese. This may allow you to read the files. If not, then I would suggest copying the files using the chines system, and renaming them into English names or numbers so that normal W98 can read them. Then you can burn a new CD. I hope this helps.

Crest, another option is for you to go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download IE 5.0, then during the installation process, choose the chinese Language Menus and Displays, as well as the IME (Input Method Editor) <--- This lets you type-in Chinese... as well as adding the font to your system, perhaps this will allow you to view the files through Internet Explorer, as it is what 98 uses as a filesystem browser.

As a side note, if you alread Have IE 5.0 you can just download the Chinese Support for it from the same address I provided above.

Near the bottom, provided you have IE 5.0 installed, there is an international language section.  There is a Chinese Text Support and Menu's Listed there.

Their titles read like the following.

Chinese (Simplified) Language Support
2802 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
Enable Internet Explorer to display Web content using Simplified Chinese language characters. NOTE: This is an updated version of Chinese (Simplified) Language Support.  Read this first

And

Chinese (Simplified) Menus and Dialogs for Internet Explorer
1116 KB/ Download Time: < 1 min
This component allows you to display the Menus and Dialogs of Internet Explorer in Chinese (Simplified).  Read this first
