HP5200C - Twain Cannot Open Data Source (Word 2000)

When I attempt to scan from Microsoft Word 2000, using the drop down menu item "Insert/Picture/From Scanner", the response is: A box which says

"Scanning Host:0  ID:7"

Returns the reply "SCSI Error! No Scanner. Twain cannot open data source. Please reinstall your scanner software."

Been there, done that. Does not work.

This error also happens in other Microsoft programs such as MS Photo Editor, which is also installed. I used the drop down menu in Photo Editor "File/SelectScanner Source/HP PrecisionScan 2.0" So ScanManager does appear to be there.

Do not have any SCSI connections/boards on the computer. The 5200c is connected on the USB port. All power cords are fine as is the USB cord. Did not install the Parallel drivers as warned. The installation went just like the book says!

Just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2000, with the SR-1 Patch. Upgraded all the patches to Win98 before I did this. No real problems. Norton 2000 shows no windows problems.

HP just replaced the unit under the exchange warranty program. The last unit lost the Lamp and power. Put in new Western Digital 20G/ATA66 hard drive and just put a clean install on all the software prior to hooking up the scanner. So no degredations on OS and a new install on the HP software.

The system is a PII, 450, 256 MB Ram,on an Acer AX63 Pro Motherboard with Creative ISA 16 bit sound card, ACER ISA modem, ACER PCI modem, SIIG Dual Parallel card, ATI Xpert 128 AGP ATX Video Card, Linksys 10/100 Lan card, Imation 120 floppy drive, HP 890C Printer, HP4L Printer, Iomega Ditto 800 Travan Tape System, Logitech cordless wheel mouse.

The system identifies the scanner and it appears in the system "Device Manager" just fine. No IRQ conflicts on any side with any of the hardware.

The files in StartUp are there: Hplamp, Stimon and Hpsjvxd.

Installed the updated files from HP including (sj435en, sj503to and sj504cpy). This now allows the scanner to send a scan to Word, and the icon appears in the send to. It works fine with Omni Pro 10 and Forms 4.0 both sending and starting there. Scanning from the HP Scan Manager does just fine with no problems, and will send to all the applications. Green button fires off with no problems.

Norton 2000, Act 4.0, WinFax Pro, Adobe 4.0 operating fine, as is Word Perfect 8.0 after some fixes.

What next?

Appreciate any help and direction you can provide. Have searched across MS and HP in all the help files and can find no references.

Thanks

Remove the scanner software!
In the installation of your software, don't just click ahead, but select USB as the scanning port
If i'm correct this scanner has an option to choose betwees SCSI and USB.
The wrong software might be chosen, so windows is looking for "Host:0  ID:7", that is the SCSI card.

ps. if everything fails, you might concider to remove office 2000, and install '97 sr2b again.

Dear jbrugman,

In setting up the software, the USB selection was made. I paid special attention to all the prompts. Have done a reinstall a couple of times to see if one of the "hooks" did not take. So far no luck. Maybe it is some form of registry problem which I have not yet detected.

As I mentioned the scanner and all the software works fine except for the feature of working from MS Office 2000 and scanning from one of those applications. Just figured this was very odd.

Thanks for the note.

Did it work in office '97 ?

Dear jbrugman,

I think it did work there. Don't use it that often but it is helpful not to switch back and forth.

In doing the install I made sure Win98 second edition was completely updated with all the patches and the disk defragged. Did not install Norton 2000 utilities until the Office 2000 was installed (and defragged) to try and avert any conflicts.

Thanks

Thing why i asked, is that when you exactly know when the problem started, you'll be able to see what coused it.
Right on this moment it might be a bug of office 2000, since it only occurs at the office 2000 suite.

Dear jbrugman,

You may be right. I have gone thru the system with a fine tooth comb and figure it is in the registry somewhere. Not my strong suit - decoding all the stuff in there. I know enough to be dangerous, and leave most of it alone. Do not know what to check there to make sure all the connections to Office 2000 are in place.

In checking the driver (using Device Manager/Imaging Device)- It recognized the HP5200c scanner just fine in the list. File "Details" all was fine. All this is just very weird.

Go figure.
