I set up a friends computer -win98se, and the thing ran great at my home but when set up at his office the modem (external Cardinal) would not dial out. His office has music playing through his phone lines so my question is: is it the music that is causing the problem or something else?

There could be many things causing this problem. If the modem is being connected to the PBX at the office, that means the line is probably digital, which won't work. You need a separate phone line, one that's not connected to the PBX. Unless, of course, you're sure you've got a modem that will handle the digital line.

Secondly, do you have to dial 9 to get an outside line? If so, go into settings, control panel, modems, then highlight your modem, and select dialing properties. You should see a question like "to access an outside line, dial" ... and this is where you put in the "9".

Also, does this line have, by chance, call notes on it? Where you get a series of stutters in the dial tone to let you know you have messages waiting? If so, you'll need to change one of the S Registers in your modem's init string to tell it to wait longer for a dial tone. With most modems I've seen, this is the S6 register, so you'll need to add something like S6=10 in the properties, connections, advanced section of your modem set up.

Thanks for the input. He didn't have a PBX but he did have three lines coming from the jack. Once the jack was rewired for a single line it worked fine.
