Whenever I scan in color, I get get a vertical yellow stripe down the left side of the page (does not happen in B&W).  This happens whether I use Deskscan 2.9 or PrecisionScan 1.0 (I am using the latest available from HP's website).

Additionally I am running win98SE (clean install).  Anyone have any ideas?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, I've seen this problem a view times before. the problem is the transport lock that isn't removed properly. If it is removed properly then the lock is internaly defective.

I appreciate your response.  I am confused about this however.  This scanner used to be fine (for over 2 years).  I noticed the problem starting to happen when I unintalled HP PictureScan 3.0 and installed HP Deskscan 2.9 and Precision Scan 1.0 (I was HOPING it was software related--but I had a feeling it was probably hardware).  Could you explain in a bit more detail what exactly the problem with the lock problem is, and how it causes the appearance of a yellow stripe (in a consistent location about an inch-and-half from the left margin).  Further, B&W scanning works perfect (no distortion whatsoever where I would see a yellow stripe--if i was scanning in color).

I am not doubting your answer, I just want to be "fully educated" before I consider replacing my scanner with another (no more warranty on scanner).  I do appreciate your time.  Thank you.
