Macs & PCs - do i need expensive programs?

do i need one of those expensive programs like DAVE or PCMacLAN to network these computers together?   is there a similar program for the PC rather than the mac.  ideally, i would like to be able to use the internet connection i have on my pc for the mac, while also sharing files and directories.

sorry but i don't know what that is the answer to.   are those the programs that i must use on the PC to get my mac networked? are they less expensive than the mac programs? do i need to have a seperate dedicated server machine to accomplish this?
