Booting into safe mode

How do you boot into safe mode on a Gateway computer?  Ctrl and F8 do not work.  All you get is a keyboard error.
F1 takes you to the CMOS.  A windows boot disk does not give you the to boot into safe mode.  I am trying to eliminate a virus on a friend of mine's gateway, but it has to be done from safe mode.  Thanks

You might also try F5. I think this was supposed to be the key in Win95. You have to press the key as soon as you see "Starting Windows..."  If you've got a fast computer, you're sunk 'cause it whips by so fast (mine's impossible to catch). Another way that you can do it that's not very good for your computer is to wait until Windows 9x starts booting. When you see that boot screen with the logo on it, power off the computer. When you reboot, Win will complain that your last boot did not complete successfully and ask yu what you want to do or something like that. It's not a great idea to shut down your computer while it's doing something (like accessing the HDD or loading an OS), but if you've got a virus that's already destroying data, it might end up the lesser of the evils. Look in your user manual as well. The key should be listed in there. Maybe look in the index under "safe mode" or something like that.
