I am not 100% sure about this, but here goes:

WIndows is a protected operating system meaning that you are not allowed to access the RS 232 port directly. You must go through the controls supplied by microsoft.

The only thing that you can so is to use the "Commincations Control" in visual basic. This is fairly high level but might be your only solution from Visual Basic.

To use it you must obtain procise information about the Xerox machine you wish to communicate with. Is it a copy machine? A fax? A modem?

If you have ever checked the DirectX debuginig report tool, It gives you the complete information of your system, and while using directx APIs you go across the OS and touches your hardware directly. May be there some liberary that will give you the access to directly to all of the hardware, another option is that if you check its registry probably you can do some thing extra.
