Win98 cannot connect to samba shares

I'm running Win95 and Linux Red Hat 6.1  I can see the Netbios name of the Samba server and when i click on it it asks for an IPC$ password when i type in the root password (or anyother password) it says the password is incorrect.  I'm going to post the smb.conf file.  I ran the following
cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/smbpasswd

i also ran smbpasswd while logged in as root and my username and still nothing.

Not sure if this is your exact problem, but have you edited the registery in your win98 box to enable plain text passwords?  If not, then it will not work.  What you need to do, is run regedit, and then drill down to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:
System:
CurrentControlSet:
Services:
VxD:
VNETSUP:

Once you get in there you will need to add a DWORD named 'EnablePlainTextPassword' with the hex value set to 1.

My bad.  Didn't read your question thoroughly enough.  With Win 95 you don't need to edit the registry.

Ok, one more followup on this.  The subject says Win98, but your questions says you are running Win95.  If you are running Win98 or if you are running Win95 OSR2, then you will need to do the registry change.  The only time you will not need to do this registry change is if you are running Win95 OSR1.

why would i want to enable plain text passwords - wouldn't encrypted passwords work ??


The reason i asked this was that I've setup Samba at a friends place and it worked great and i didn't need to enable that.

Guess, you wouldn't need to enable it.  From this section in your smb.conf it looks like you have enable encrypted passwords for samba.

So, I'm not sure what your problem is.  Normally if you get the prompt for the IPC$ password it is either the password encryption or it can't find the username/password combination on the samba box that matches who you are logged into on your 95/98/NT machine.  So, as long as you are actually logged into your 98 machine as a username that exists in your samba password file.
