Scanjet 5200C Does not scan

I have used it for several months with no problems, only scanned around 30 items. Suddenly it does nothing when I push the green button. When I click on HP Presision Scan in Satarup Programs, The small bluish HP Presision Scan Window appears, but then nothing further happens.

The scanner makes its normal noise when I turn on the computer, and when I go to scanner properties/ General tab/ Test scanner and click on TEST SCANNER. At the beginning of that test the scanner makes a small noise and at the end of the test it makes the same small noise, and in between for about 2 minutes it does nothing. After the test on the General tab it says that it has successfully completed the diagnostic test.

When I click the Troubleshooting tab/Test, I get a message stating "Your scanner is currently being accessed by another application. Please wait for other application to finish or close other application to allow this application to access." I don't think another application is running, but do not know how to check.

One strange thing, when I am in the scanner properties and click on the LAMP tab, the page shows as being the Lamp tab, but the page info is the same as before I clicked on the Lamp tab. I think this is somehow significant.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software several times, using the guidelines specified for doing so.

I have also checked to be sure the computer is recongizing the scanner being connected to the computer.

Check for temp files (*.tmp) on your system and delete them all.
Hundreds/thousands of temp files might be the reason since the PrecisonScan 2.0 SW has a (starting & closing) routine that checks for temp files that it created in order to clean them up. When it has to search for such files amongst many others, it takes very long to start and may lead eventually to an error message Sorry can not find your scanner.
NOTE: Testing on another PC might be helpfull in diagnosing the prob as HW or SW related.

By the way, installed USB or parallel (bios LPT1 settings 7+378+ECP) makes no difference?
