My old 3.2gig hard drive would lock up on scan disc and defrag.  Instead of worrying about it I installed a new 10 gig hd and created an image on it from my old hd.  I reformated my old hd.  My problem is my old hd and my new hd will not scan disks they both freeze up part way through.  I doubt that both my hd's have errors.  Is there a simple solution besides a complete format?

reboot, hold down left shift key while booting to get to safe mode

run scandisk and defrag from there

chances are, you have something like virus software, etc. which is trying to access the drive. starting in safe mode stops everything from loading but gives you access to these tools.

thanks for the C!
if the question was answered with the information you needed, why would you grade a "C"?  If it was not the info you wanted why would you accept the answer?  Within 20 minutes of posting your solution, you have the information that solves your problem and you give a "C"???
glad I could help regardless

not a problem, sorry for going off.
For future reference, and this is just my opinion, I would not accept an answer that I would not grade as an A.

Reason being, the answer to my question is the information I desire.  If some one gives it to me completely, they have answered the question and receive an A.  If they have not, they question remains unanswered until he/she elaborates or some one else offers a better solution.
