After moving My PC to another location the scanner/printer cable was re-attached.The green button does nothing and start/programs/hp scan etc. gives me a message "scanner is currently accessed by another application. Please wait or close application" Prior to this it worked fine. I reinstalled scanner with same results. Printer communication tests okay.

Are you using Win95 or 98?

Windows 95:

This error is usually caused by a corrupted driver. Open the device manager and remove the listing for HP C5190A. It will be listed under HP ScanJet Scanners.

If there is a conflict (yellow exclamation mark) on the HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter, then remove it as well. Then open the control panel and go into ADD NEW HARDWARE. Do NOT allow windows to search. Choose SCSI controllers and click NEXT. Then, under manufacturers, choose Shuttle Technology. Under model, select the HP EPST Parallel SCSI Adapter and click next. Click next and finish until you are done. Then reboot your computer. The problem should be gone.

Windows 98:

This error is usually caused by 2 programs that should be running, but that have been disabled. Click START > RUN > type MSCONFIG > click OK > click the STARTUP tab > put a checkmark in HPScanMonitor and StillImageMonitor.

If the HPScanMonitor and/or StillImageMonitor are not there, then they need to be added. Click START > SETTINGS > TASKBAR AND STARTMENU > click ADD > type C:\Windows\system\stimon.exe > click NEXT > click the STARTUP folder > click finish. Then click ADD again > type C:\Windows\system\hpsjvxd.exe > click NEXT > click the STARTUP folder > click finish. Click OK > now restart your computer.

If either file (stimon.exe or hpsjvxd.exe) cannot be located, you will need to extract them from the windows 98 CD or cab files. Click START > RUN > type SFC > click OK > click EXTRACT ONE FILE FROM INSTALLATION DISK > type STIMON.EXE (or HPSJVXD.EXE) > click START > where it says RESTORE FROM it should state D:\win98 (where D:\ is your cdrom drive) or from C:\windows\options\cabs. It could list any other location that your version of windows was installed from (on my PC it reads C\Win98). The SAVE FILE IN should state C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. Then click OK. Do this for one or both files, depending on which was missing.

After all that has been done or verified, go back up to the section for Windows 95 and do it. That can also cause the same errorin windows 98.

Good luck!
