Loosing Internet connection

I went into U.S. Robotic's site to upgrade my 2x Winmodem Fax (not a v.90, but a 56Kps) modem. When the download started, my internet connection disconnected and my computer froze. Now everytime I try to download any thing, the same thing happens. I can get e-mail and on to the Internet just fine. Do I need a new modem?

check the following things:

1) run scan disk (thorough)
2) run the system file checker (under accessories)
3) check that special phone services such as messaging etc are not in use.
4) check for local disk space.
5) issue an AT&F, ATZ, AT&W to the modem under hyperterminal or alike.
6) uninstall/reinstall modem drivers.
