Enable USB port

I'm having a problem enabling my USB port for my new Acer 640U scanner.  My laptop is a Acer Extensa 366D.  I can't find my original documents for my computer.  I haven't been able to get any help from the manufactuer.  I'v wrote them but they never respond.  My computer is compatible for the scanner to work I just can't figure out how to enable that port so it will read that the hardware is there.  If you can help me it will be so appreciated.  Thanks.  Sherie Fox

You should be able to just plug it in, I am not sure I quite understand your question.  Could you please elaborate?

Well it is plugged in.  My scanner instructions say to read my original documents for the laptop but I can't find them.  I just need some help with enabling it.  What actual function do I use?  I've looked in my device manager and my scanner port doesn't even register.
Then it is a problem with the laptop, with USB, when you plug the device in the operationg system (you are using win98 or win2k aren't you?) should automatically set up the device for you.

I'm using Win95.  I assume it doesn't set it up for you with 95.?
Do you have OSR2 (win95B), or do you have the first version?  The first version does not support USB, the B version does.

My version of Win95 is B so it should work.  But I'm going to upgrade anyway just to see if it is a problem with the laptop.   I'll keep posting.  Thanks.
The Win95B might have an update to enable USB, I am not sure, but if you go to the Microsoft site, I am sure you can find one,
