It is probably a hardware related error!
It could be dust on the "lamp" or the mirror inside the scanner! - Take a look, and wipe it off if there are any dust!

Greenturtle, have your scanner problem been solved?  If so, what was the problem?  I am having the same identical problem with my scanner.

Most likely this is a hardware failure. Probably the SW scanner test will fail aswell. Vertical yellowish lines which are related to the position of the object on the scanner bed indicate malfunctioning CCD's. A B&W scan (for example OCR functionality) is typically not affected by this HW failure. The only way to fix this prob is by having the scanner repaired.
NOTE: Only in rare cases yellow lines/bands are due to dirt on the internal mirror and can be solved by very carefully cleaning the mirror.
