Dell XPS PCI Problem

I have a Dell XPS R400, with 128mb RAM and Windows 98 that until fairly recently worked fine. I reformatted the HD, as things had gotten pretty messy and I just
wanted to start afresh. However, the windows system device manager now
reports a problem with the PCI controller, saying that no drivers are
installed and that the resources allocated to it are incorrectly allocated. I cannot find any appropriate drivers on any of the disks that dell supplied, including
the win98 CD.

This is unfortunately a major problem because it means that my WinModem and
sound card no longer function. Although the modem is visible, windows
reports that it is not installed when I try and use it and when I try to
play a sound, windows says that the soundcard may be in use. Does anyone
have any ideas?

Before delete all yellow "!" in your control panel /system

Control panel / Modem : "have disk" - path : E:\ (E: = your CDROM - you need modem.inf file )

- Sb live : You must have a Creative Labs Cdrom. Execute install or setup ...
- Yamaha : you must a DELL Cdrom with many drivers.

First off this problem isn't moderate, it is definitely hard since you're talking about an effectively "dead" system when dealing with PCI since the controller is not accessible.

Have you made an effort to see what DELL can tell you?  Info on their website? Email one of their support links?  Pursuing them will be the shortest path since once you reach them correctly they have all the information to put the sytem together in the first place (at least one could hope).

Anyway, I'm willing to try to help.

The first step I can give you to try to solve the problem is to gather information.  The best program I've found for general PCI info is PCICFG at http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/user/ralf/pub/WWW/files.html it can be found in the RBPCI file.  Get it downloaded and put it on a bootable floppy and run it with the verbose option set.  Redirect the output of the program to a file then post the contents of the file here.  This will tell us what the manufacturer of the PCI related chips are and we'll dig from there, if you're willing to go through the journey.

Sorry about the update delay, havent had time recently. The reason I havent contacted Dell is because EE has always been more helpful in the past, and it doesnt involve 3 hours on the phone :)

- Did you try to download drivers ?

A) Download all drivers.
B) Delete all yellow "!" in your control panel /system
C) Install drivers.

Yeah it was a drivers problem, all solved now, Dell had kindly delivered all the wrong disks for everything but the video card. Thanx a lot for your help, here are the points frache.
