I have HP Scanjet 5100C. It was working fine until after being idle for a while. Now I get horizontal lines, grinding noise at the end and wrong colors in my scanned image. I followed instructions in unlocking but still does the same. After the scan, when it asks me to accept the image (ugly color usually all yellow, sometimes all green image) or cancel, I cancel & scan again, the grinding noise gets harder & starts from the very beginning to the end. Picture come out worse sometimes it says no image was scanned. I am using the original HP cable that came with the scanner. Please help.

1. Try a new parallel cable make sure it says IEEE1284 on it or new usb whichever you have it connected as

2. Make sure your bios has the parallel port mode to ecp

3. Plug the scanner direct to the wall no powerstrips or surge protectors.

4. The lamp will go off 13 minutes after the last scan. If you do not preview before this, it results in colored stripes or streaks on your preview scans. It may become worse after leaving the HP PrecisionScan LT scanner software open for more than 18 minutes.

5. Go into bios turn off power management

6. if none of this fixed it then your scanner will need to be serviced
