I have a Pelxtor cdrw drive & Pioneer 10x dvd drive. I have set Pioneer drive to be default for audio cd's via Control Panel, but I can only hear audio cd's through the cdrw drive? Data cd's played in both drives have sound. The cdrw is set as the secondary master with the dvd as slave.

When I put the speaker jack in the jack socket on the dvd drive it works?

Any help appreciated ;
system AMD Athlon 750, 256 mg ram, soundblaster Live 1024 & ATI rage Fury 32mb graphic card.

Inside the computer there is an audio cable that carries the CD audio (in analog format) from the output of the drive to the CD-audio input of the sound card.  The sound card then routes this directly to the speaker output of your computer.  In most systems, there is only ONE of these from the CD, CDRW, or DVD drive to the sound board.  If you want to use your DVD as the CD player, you must move this connection from the CDRW to the DVD drive OR, if your sound board has another input (AUX perhaps) you could add another audio cable from the DVD to the sound board.

This problem CANNOT be fixed in software or from the control panel as there is no physical connection between the DVD's output and the sound card.

If you are not comfortable working inside a computer, please get help and this cable is often hard to reach and you can pull other things loose when working with it.
