HP Scanner 5100C Problems

My HP Scanner 5100C is making a terrible clicking and grinding noise when I try to scan a document and I do not get good document results.  This is the first problem that I have had with the scanner.  It is approximately 2 years old.  What can I do to correct the problem?

HP ScanJet 5100C Scanner Family - Vertical or Horizontal Lines Appear on Scanned Images, Grinding Noise
ISSUE: Vertical or horizontal lines appear on scanned images. The top lines of the source document may repeat as the image is drawn on HP PrecisionScan. Or the image may appear distorted or muddy. A dark border may appear all the way around the image.

Or

The message "No regions were found during the preview scan" appears when trying to scan. The scanner may make a grinding noise while scanning.

SOLUTION: Unlock the scanner:

Turn the computer off.
Unplug the power cord from the back of the scanner.
Locate the lock lever on the back of the scanner next to the socket for the power cord.
Pull the lever all the way out (toward the side of the scanner) until you hear the scanner unlock.
Plug the power cord back in.
Restart the PC and retry the scan.

make sure the scanner is also plugged direct to the wall powerstrips surge protectors and UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supplies) can adversly affect the scanner

if none of this works then the scanner will need to be serviced
