1. Make sure that it's not a winmodem (http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc).

2.
You'll need to find out the IRQ/interrupt of your modem (either from BIOS settings or physical jumpers on the card) and the I/O port.

3. use /sbin/setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq X port Y
to make sure the OS knows how to access the modem

4.  Find out if your ISP uses PAP/CHAP or someother authentication scheme (create appropriate /etc/ppp/pap-secrets file if it is needed)

This should get you started. A fuller and better explanation than I could give in this limited space can be found at:
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ISP-Hookup-HOWTO.html
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html

If you read through these, try things out and then come back here with problems I'll be glad to help.

Best wishes,

Reasonable for a newbie.
Linuxconf could be a help here.

PrblmSlvr,
good point on Linuxconf if it's just that there's a config problem.  But we don't know that yet.  Also to use Linuxconf yairt will have to find out the info about the DNS and there's no point in trying any of that if it's a winmodem.  Point taken thought,
best wishes,
