How many keywords should you use?

I had taken a class a couple of yrs ago, and some of the material that I was given talks about keywords. I states you should use <1000 characters is this still true? Can I use 2000 characters. I guess our marketing department can't make up there mind.

Can anyone give any insight?

You can use as many keywords as you like but the more you use the less relevant they become.  You could look at it this way: if your title is Home improvement and your keyword is home improvement and you have the word home improvement in the body of your page the search engin will probably list you first for home improvement.  If you use the same senario and list 99 more keywords (house improvement, fix it up,...etc.) then the chances of you being #1 is cut way down.  I use doorway pages and single or just a couple of keywords to accomplish this.  In other words the more you use the less relevance each one has and the less you use the more relevance each one has.

That's what I was looking for. I didn't know is there was only a certain number you could use.
