OK... whew... rather a big question, but I'll try to give you a quick overview.

When you think about streaming audio/video over the net, think of three different processes:
1. The encoder.
2. The Server.
3. The client.

1. It's the encoders job to convert the source into a digital file. For example, a simple web-cam could be the source of your video, and with some software, you could encode the source to a file.

2. It's the servers job to serve up the file to your web surfers. If you want to stream rather than offer simple downloads, there's some software needed as well.

3. The client (your web visitors) needs to receive the file and decode it into visible/audible format.

Now, if you're looking to take a live event and broadcast it over the net, consider all three. There are tools available to you:
 - Microsoft - Media Tools / Media Server / Media Player (http://www.Microsoft)
 - Real - RealProducer / RealServer / RealPlayer (www.real.com )
Those are the two most popular environments... Keep in mind that if you want to keep thing simple, you may need to choose one (either Microsoft or Real)... both have pros and cons (price, availability, ease-of-deployment, etc). Doing this may depend on the expertise you have available to you and your budget.

Does this help?

On the same subject, what would you need (software and/or hardware) if you wanted to stream a watchable TV standard picture with sound over either the internet or a direct dial connection.

Is this possible and if so, what sort of bandwidth would be required?
