I have a jpeg of a house and would like to change the colors of the house. Main part of house white and trim dark green.   How can I select, then change the colors on these parts of the image?
Thanks

First convert the file to native photoshop format. The next steps could get tricky and/or complicated, not to mention that you have about a bazillion different options for doing it.

1) Check your channels for one that has a high contrast between the house and the rest of the background. Use this channel to start your selection process which you can clean up by using masks/alpha channels.

2)Start with an alpha channel and mask off the parts that you dont want to color. Then use that alpha channel/selection to "paint within the lines".

3)Use channel modes to allow you to color over just the lightest or just the darkest parts of the house. Experiment with which channel mode works best for your picture. (Exclusion and Difference are NOT the ones you want). This is probably your best solution and should be used in conjunction with the methods above.

4)Make selections using either the magic wand tool or method 1 or 2 (or both) then adjust the colors with the Hue & Saturation dialog.

As i said there are about a bazillion different methods that can be used individually or in conjunction for better results. Dont be afraid to make a backup photo and experiment.

What was wrong with the answer? The steps above are the professional way of doing it.
