Outlook Express 5 has spell checking (Tools -> Spelling) when you are editing your message.  I don't remember if OE98 had that or not.  Give it a try.  If not, do the upgrade (it's free).

If you go back to the original screen, can you see the Tools -> Options -> Spelling tab?

Hello  GivenRandy
In  Option  I  have: General,read,send
compose,signatures,security,connection,
maintenance, no  Spelling tab.
In order for the spell check option to work in OE you must have a microsoft 32 bit spell checker install on your computer (expamples Microsoft Works 4.5, Microsoft Office 7.0 for Windows 95 or Microsoft Office 97 programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint or later versions.

Which is what I am getting at.  However, there are known cases where installing some software (e.g., Office 2000) has cleared the spell checker.  Most situations require re-installing Outlook Express.

As an alternative, you can install a 3rd party spell checker like:

The next step is to check the registry settings (if you have a spell checker installed already).

What  this  means is: I  do  not  have
spell  checker on  my  win 98 (first edition) disk
because  there  is  none, and if  this
is the  case I  will  have to  buy it
if  so  which is  the  best  bang for
the  buck  ( of the  Microsoft  wariety)?
