asked on

Win 95 & WIN.COM

Here is my question(s):

My friend dropped off his computer & it began loading like usual but, it stopped after the Windows 95 splash screen & went back to command prompt.  The error message read as follows:

Can not find WIN.COM unable to continue loading Windows.

Facts:

He has a Compaq (seems like factory install of Windows 95)
The computer has 8MB of RAM

1)How can I fix this?

2)As far as I can guess, can I just copy WIN.COM off my machine which runs 98SE?

3) I put WIN.COM in the root of C, right ?

4) Would the sys command (sys c:) help at all?

Thank you for any help!!!!!!!!!

If hewittg suggestion above doesn't do it, edit your autoexec.bat and make sure the path statement includes c:\windows.

To answer your questions. Sys C will add Command.com IO.sys, and MSDOS.sys. And you can see by the article that Glenn posted that your Win.com is missing when you get that message. You will also see that you can't use your Windows 98 Win.com, but there are instructions how to extract another Windows 95 win.com. I think that System File Checker (extraction) and Scanreg /restore are the reasons I like Windows 98 over Windows 95. Srwings has already told you it goes in the Windows file and not on the root.
Another thing you might want to do is scan your friend's computer for viruses. There's at least one virus which moves win.com or renames it. If you have an up to date scanner, make a recovery disk and use it to boot and scan your friend's machine. Failing that, run scandisk from DOS safe mode, to see if the hard drive is corrupted.

I was just in a newsgroup where someone reported Win.com disappeared on them right after they visited their own homepage on homestead.com. After the machine locked, they restarted to that error. Kinda weird.

I'm sorry if I screwed up.  I have never used this board before.  Usually on other boards, I must rate everyone who answers me.  I thought it was the same here.  I looked to rate everyone, but once I accepted the answer from 1 person, I could not rate anyone else.  How do I decline someone's answer & tell the board someone else was right.  I usually give everyone a good rating for the effort.  I don't mean to offend anyone!! I'm not really sure how I accept or decline someone on this board.  Please help & answer my question if you don't mind.

Citt,
No need to apologize.  The majority of your anti-virus software has the option to make a rescue disk.  If you do not have anti-virus software, you get purchase it or get one from the net.  Do you have any virus software installed?

Yes, I have innoculate it.  But, it is free.  But I don't get how a recue disk could work.  Doesn't it still need the database of signitures to look for?  Anyway, who care?  Just please explain to me how to make the disk & I guess I boot with it & let it do its thing or run the program.  Please let me know.  thanks.  I used to use a program called AVP, but it seems they charge now.  Oh well.  Any suggestions would help.  I'll go look to see what I find in Innoculate it.  I must admit I am somewhat confused.  If the boot disk can save me from viruses why did I have to install the whole program.  Any help is appreciated.

Citt,
The boot disk is to check the boot sector and all files on boot up.  The install of the program constantly checks your machine while you are working.  I am sorry, I have been out.  Will look into innoculate, I use Mcafee.  Talk to you soon.

When I tried Innoculate, it didn't have a boot disk like McAfee. See if you can trial McAfee or Nortons.
