asked on

creating a text editor

I'm trying to create a text editor but I have no idea how. I have some of the functions working, like exit, search and open. but not new, underline, bold, italic, centre, left, right alignment. and more. I want it similar to notepad in win98. Thanks.

There are two sample projects with VB called MDI Note and SDI Note.  These would be a good beginning.

Also you should look at the Rich Text Box control which will allow you to do some of the formatting features you want.

"I made this program because the default text editor for windows (notepad) just wasnt sufficient for my needs. This program is a basic text editor with all the functionality of notepad, but with extra options like associate with text files, always on top, drag and drop, opening files larger than 2 mb, etc..."

If you are using VB6, Start anew project using the application wizard. You'll get an application that has the functions you need and even more... like to connect to the internet. Just start a new project using the wizard.

Hi
D**n. This ******* MSDN remove my favorite Bruce's "Hardcore.." from on-line books. Thanks to Karl E. Peterson for placing this book at his site. Take a look at http://www.mvps.org/vb/hardcore/
From contents choose chapter 9. There you can find full documented step-by-step instruction how to create advanced text editor. To download source code choose first item in content - "Hardcore Visual Basic" and then chose "Downloading and Installing the Source Code"

Cheers

Visual Basic is Microsoft’s event-driven programming language and integrated development environment (IDE) for its Component Object Model (COM) programming model. It is relatively easy to learn and use because of its graphical development features and BASIC heritage. It has been replaced with VB.NET, and is very similar to VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), the programming language for the Microsoft Office product line.
