Umax laptop problems

I have a UMAX model 318T that will not bootup, the power supply has been replaced and a new battery. When you hit the power button the only thing you get is the power light comes on and a light to the far left (I assume is the standby) comes on too, there is nothing shown on the screen, you can not hear anything running (like HD)  the CPU fan doesn't run (but I assume this is power saving feature, meaning it doesn't run until the CPU gets hot).
Nothing I do will change what the system will do.
I cannot find anything technical for this at Umax's site or parts for it??
I am thinking the MB may be fried but since I cannot locate any parts for it I can not decide if this is worth repairing.
I am looking for some help locating parts for it if possible or maybe some other possibility of what the problem could be.

Ray,
Have you looked at ht ewires from the power supply onto the mobo.  One, they are probably set right, correct on the right and correct on the left.  Have you ensure they are seated properly?
You know the power distribution of those cords.

Just a question.

Yes the power supply cord is making good contact with the connection on the laptop, at least I assume so since it does charge the battery while it is in the laptop, the power supply was replaced with a new one right after the problem developed, they asked me what it could be and without me even seeing it I said it could be the PS, I never intended them to buy a new one but they did, now I feel I owe them a correct assessment. I should learn not to make hasty guesses until I actually get to look at it. They even bought a new battery (over $150)

Ok, Assume, LOL, you and I know about that.
What was the initial problem.  I "Assume" you gave them all the basics to get to that assumption.  If all the basics were covered you are probably right in the MOBO.
Want me to look for parts?

Want me to look for parts?

If you can, the internal parts are hard to find, at least I haven't had any luck yet.
Umax dropped support for everything except their scanners

The reason I suggested it may be the PS was they said they pluged the cord into the PS and it made a sound like a spark jumping and the computer wouldn't bootup, I thought they were going to let me look at it before they did anything else but they went ahead and bought the parts first, I tried to tell them that if there was any kind of internal damage that the cost would be more then the whole thing was even worth.
I feel bad since this is a relative, they already went and bought a new Compaq laptop even after I told them to stay away from anything Compaq. Some people will never learn.

Never learn, it may have very well been the MOBO.  I have had them fry, never knew where the sound was coming from.  Where do you want to go from here?  If they crossed the cable it still should not have fried it though, just won't boot.  It will have all the symptoms you now describe.
Just my input.

have you tried running it without the battery?  I've seen notebooks have problems like that with a bad battery.  Or a bad power supply (cable and AC/DC adapter).

It has been tried without the battery, a new battery was bought, and a new PS also.

I had the case apart (at least part way) and I can see no burned spots, I know this really doesn't mean anything since the MB can be fried without any outward signs.

What I am needing is to find a supplier (in USA) that handles the internal parts but the responce I have recieved from my current suppliers is this is a throwaway machine, even the company (Umax) doesn't offer any support for them.

rayt333:  Just a desperate shot:  RAM?

Even if ram was bad you should get something on the screen, the screen remains totaly blank.

I would think it was the video card but even then you cannot hear the HD spin up or for that matter any sound.

PS: I recieved an answer back from Umax.

California is the only US authorized service center.  If you want your unit repaired by us, you are going to have to call and get an RMA#.If you are in
warranty you can FAX 510-490-1590 your proof of purchase along with your name and phone number. If you are not in warranty then you can call or fax and then a technician will give you instructions.  UMAX does not ship out any replacement parts.

THANK YOU.

I believe it will be a waste of your time.

I think lighting struck it  ;>) and I need to call my insurance company to get it replaced (with another brand, probably Winbooks, what would be your suggestion for a new laptop, not the latest or greatest, just a good quality laptop

If you suggest Compaq then I am going to ask CS to take the points back and I will remove you from my "A" list

I remember that storm and I will support that if needed, hell of a storm I might add.
I guess we need to know there requirements.  Are they going full 3d blown games, internet high speed access or the avid user like my mommy and daddy inlaw, I set up a 2 thousand dollar solitaire machine, upsets me because I would love to have the one I built for them, oh well, they can afford it.
If it is the latter, I would tell them to do the ebay.com and get a real nice one for real cheap.  If it is the first one, have the Ray make the recommendation because it will have everything they need and more.

Be good.

See, fooled ya.  I have NO compaq's out of 240 pc's.  I must admit though, my compaq servers are doing well.  Still have my reservations.

I own two so that give me the right to tell the truth about them.

I will have to say they are reliable but they are a pain trying to install any hardware in them. And the factory software should have been the first stuff to go.

Yeah but that is hindsight, at the time I thought Compaq was supposed to be the best and have the best Tech support.

What a crock that turned out to be.

Sorry, if you don't want the e-mail notices then you may want to turn it off, we have habit of chatting on answered questions, usally not our own, but this time it is on mine, glenn is very good about finding hard to find parts and stuff, this time it was all for nothing, the PC mauufactuer will not sell to third party, so I am going to junk this out and chalk it all up to bad experience with Umax, and from now on will avoid anything made by them.

One of the luxuries of E-E, is you can turn it off with the e-mail notification, lol.

Have a good day micro.

Hey, I put a smiley face on it.  Kidding!

Frankly, I listen (read?) what you guys say on all the questions and learn.

And speaking of Compaq's, what I dislike most is what they do to the hard drive so you can't use standard tools to fix boot problems.  Damn SoftPaq's.  And what's this with spelling everything with a "q"?  :-)

Sorry micro, I guess I didn't see it, yeah this site is better when you have a sense of humor, for the matter just working on computers, you had better have a sense of humor or you will go crazy.
