What kind of problem do you have ?
Does everything loads fine (without error) ?
mem /d/p shows the drivers on memory (mscdex, mouse, etc) ?
Have you run the sound blaster setup prog to be sure the port number, irq, etc are correct ?

Here is an excerpt from my autoexec.bat
for commands for my SoundBlaster16.
The same probably won't work for you,
but you need some similar commands.
There is nothing in your autoexec.bat or config sys that initializes your sound card. The SET BLASTER line just sets an environment variable.
Look on your C drive for similar programs. Also dredge through any old autoexec.??? files you have on this or past hard disks.

what happened ? Maybe your bord is not a soundblaster 16. this tools is avaiable to the other board as well.
What is the sound card? Get the exact model type and chip set. Go to the manufactures site and check for a dos driver. Just loading the pieces of soundblaster 16 init strings is not going to work for 60% of the sound cards out there.
A search of the internet indicates that the PB Multimedia S606 has an integrated Crystal sound chip. As you may know PB is no more. Their support has been taken over by http://pbsupport.alorica.com/
Try here for the updated driver for the sound card.

How are you sure the sound command line is correct ?
Try removing removing everything from high memory (just for testing).
If still does not work try removing one by one (mouse, cd support, etc) untill you get the sound board working. (do not suppose it´s working, test it, make it "speak")
Have you tryed the old DOS friend NDIAGS ?
Maybe some of the devices are conflicting.

Go into device manager and look at the sound card properites:
Is there a SB compatable entry?
If so check the I/O, IRQ, and DMA it uses to ensure it is 220, 5 and 1. If not either change the autoexec.bat of change it here.
If no SB Compatable check the resources used by the parent device the last resources should be for the SB compatability.
Again if you boot directly into DOS you will need a driver loaded either in the AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS

Device manager ? It´s DOS we´re talking about...
He's only suggesting using devman to find out what the settings should be for dos.
rhoady is right. There is no device or program in config.sys or autoexec.bat to handle the sound board. This will only work if the game you´re using has native support to this board and does not need a device loaded. Is that the case ?
Sorry about the Device Manager reference forgot that DOS was Boss.
I believe that MB has an integrated sound card.
Get into the BIOS Setup for on board periferial (SP) devices and check that.
If you can figure which sound chip you have you can download the driver (and DOS programs) from here http://www.cmedia.com.tw/

My motherboard is way newer then that, also have a Crystal onboard but the only options I have is enable/disable it. No way to know what resources it´s using.

Have you run NDIAGS or other software that can show you irqs beeing used?
Is there any test program to be sure the soundboard is working? Have you tried any of them?
Have you tried running the game with just the sound (without mouse, cd)?

Forgot to say. my crystal inboard card uses 3 irqs (Blergh).
This, in my opinion, shows some kind of lasyness from the part of the manufacturer and enjoys conflicting with the usb port.

Increasing the points like that won't do much. Most of the reason there's no answer is because hardly anyone reads this topic area anymore. If it was a more populated topic area, you'd have had an answer long ago. Increasing the points won't help, because no matter how much you increase the points, there's still going to be hardly anyone seeing the thread.
You could try posting a 0-point question in the lounge with a link to this thread, then you'll get more input and hopefully an answer. :)

exelrud im shure the sound command line is right now. i have had a boot disk working befor on my computer i just cant rember how
The reason I asked is that maybe something may have happened to the sound board.
Also what the game says. It says that there is not sound present or just does not make any noise?
Also what the game says. It says that there is not sound present or just does not make any noise?
Going to give this a shot,
1. Does the sound card work? Have you confirmed that this card is capable of running in a dos mode? Does it work in windows?
2. When not booting from a boot disk, does sound work in DOS? (boot to command line and type the set blaster command at the prompt. then test it)
3. It may not be the setup of your autoexec/config files, test the sound using another dos game if you got one, if not get one.
So to start, confirm the card works...
second, test the card to see if it works when in dos mode?
Let me know the results of those two tests.....

to exelrud the sound bord works fine...
and if during boot with the bootdisk it dose not say loading sound drivers it will not work. when loading a game it says fm chip is not present that means that the sound did not load...

if the sound dose not load on boot with the bootdisk it will not work so messing with the games is pointless.
You NEED / have to load the DOS Drivers for the sound card!!! In the SB16 examples above you will notice the lines:
c:\sb16\SB16SET /M:220 /VOC:220 /CD:220 /MIDI:220 /LINE:220 /TREBLE:0
c:\sb16\SBCONFIG.EXE /S
These are loading the DOS Creative Labs sound card drivers. As the Crystal Sound chipset is manufactured by AzTech, the Creative Labs (a different manufacturer) DOS drivers above will NOT work.
To get the AzTech DOS Drivers for your computer (assuming you don't have the original Cd-Rom / Diskettes that came with your computer) you can go to this site.
http://www.windrivers.com/identity/SOUND/company/crystal.htm
This page will tell you how to identify which Sound Card that you have (pay particular attention to the Packard Bell section on the bottom of the page) and will provide links to the necessary Driver downloads.
Normally, the DOS Drivers come with their own AUTOEXEC.BAT update routines (Make sure you make a copy of your old AUTOEXEC.BAT first, just to be safe), but the tendency of these setups is to place the necessary statements anywhere in the .BAT. Once the DOS Driver Setup is done, be prepared to move the statements added to the AUTOEXEC.BAT into the MS-DOS section of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file as you don't want the DOS drivers loading when you are going into Windows.

A couple of things. First off, what are the name of the games you're trying to run? And secondly, are you running DOS only on that computer or Windows 95/98? If you're doing 95/98, you can take a look at the device manager to find out what interrupts and DMA the sound card uses.
Have you tried to run the game in DOS prompt in Win95/98 or even <gasp> Windows 3.1?
Have you tried to run the game in DOS prompt in Win95/98 or even <gasp> Windows 3.1?
Just some other pointers that I used
to throw in my old config.sys/autoexec.bat
stick a "LOADHIGH" in front of MOUSE.COM and MSCDEX.EXE
ie.
LOADHIGH MOUSE.COM
LOADHIGH MSCDEX.EXE /D:001 /E
minor mods, but if you're in DOS mode it'll free up some conventional memory for ya..
As for your sound problems, that's the EXACT same line I used to have (after editing those @$#@'ing files enough you begin to remember the most obscure commands), so my only thought is if you have the card on the right IRQ (ie. have you checked the jumpers on the board itself?), AND if you're running win95/98, make sure it's running YOU'RE autoexec.bat and NOT theirs...could be you're editing the same file over and over, but the computer just isn't using it..:(
just my 2 cents..

It appears that device=c:\windows\cwbinit. exe /A is the device driver for the Crystalware audio device. Now who was the first one to say that you had a Crystal sound card and needed the device drivers to EMULATE a soundblaster???

I suggested searching emulator Tuesday, August 08 2000... at the time the suggestion was posted we were not sure if the sound card was clone or original SB...
paasky is correct.. he was the first to comment DOS drivers.. directing the questioner to the Creative Labs Sound Blaster site. Noting this.. On August 15th, I ADDED some additional technical comment and redirected the questioner to the correct DOS Driver site befitting the hardware he/she has.. (AzTech is Crystal's chip manufacturer).
