asked on

Cannot connect to Sql*Plus

Hello, we've got the following problems:

1.We received an error :
ORA-04031 unable to allocate string bytes of shared memory

Our solution was:
dbshut
edit init.ora and increase the values for the db_buffer_blocks and sahred_pool_size
dbstart

2. At this point we have received errors
ERROR:
ORA-03113: end-of-file on communication channel

ORA-24323: value not allowed
Error accessing PRODUCT_USER_PROFILE
Warning:  Product user profile information not loaded!
You may need to run PUPBLD.SQL as SYSTEM
ORA-24323: value not allowed
Error accessing package DBMS_APPLICATION_INFO
ERROR:
ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE

Use of Oracle SQL feature not in SQL92 Entry Level.
ORA-24323: value not allowed

Connected to:
Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.5.0.0 - Production
PL/SQL Release 8.0.5.0.0 - Production

3. After all the errors, we obtain a connection to the database only via Server Manager,
where we can execute sql statements,
but cannot connect to Sql*Plus

Maybe there is a problem with SqlNet
How to resolve it ?

Thanks
J.K.

Are you connecting with SQL*Plus from a client machine or on the server?  If using SQL*Net, what is your connect/host string?  What is the entry in your tnsnames.ora file?  Is this the first time connecting with SQL*Plus or did it work before your initial error?

Hi Jivka,

Sbenyo has given the correct solution to your problem. Can you check for the SGA size of your database:

SVRMGR> show sga

I feel (as sbenyo suggested) either you have wrongly entered the shared_pool_size parameter or you have given a  value for shared_pool_size , which is not supported on your operating system. Ensure that , if your system memory is 1000MB, your SGA should come to about 20-30% of the machine memory.

Hope this helps,
Jagannadh

Ps: One more suggestion I can give is, whenever you attempt to modify any parameter in the init.ora, first preserve a copy of that file and then proceed.
Hi,
connect as a system and execute the
file  PUPBLD.SQL
which you will get at
$ORACLE_HOME//sqlplus/admin/
after this try connecting you get
connected

vingle, I agree that what you propose should eventually be done, but there is a more serious problem first, and good suggestions have been given on that, so please withdraw your answer and make it a comment.
