asked on

about win98 update

my son left his win98 disks at school and we can't get his laptop to work with my internet dial up settings - something about the network adapter :)  he uses the network at school and when they set it up, someone adjusted his settings.

so - can i buy a win98 upgrade disk and can we install the upgrade without having the original 98 disks?

thanks!

Yes you can, this is a short answer but the cd is needed for initial install.  First look on the hdd and see if you have the cab files for win98.

doesn't look like it. i searched for *.cab files and found
runhelp in c:\windows
mini - windows\system
iejava - win\system
rb000-rb0004 - win\sysbckup

win98 is operational and just fine on the laptop except we can't access my dialup account.

??

thx

can i ask one more thing, glenn?

i got a copy of win98-se. is that enough to use w/o the original disks?

the disk says it will search the system for evidence of eligibility. it will find a legal authentic copy of win98.

glenn: forget it, it doesn't work  :)
Look at this.

See if it will download and work.

thanks, will check it out.

i got hold of a win98 disk AND a win98-se disk. are there any files i should copy while the disk is in my possession? any restore utilities or anything? i don't want to do anything that will lose, risk or overwrite his data, but if there's anything else i should do to clean up his computer, i'd like to know. (i use win95 and don't know win98)

thanks!!

ps: computers - can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em. we got the disks and i tried to connect. i figured once i got the error message, i would put in the win98 cd. well - it connected -isn't that bizarre.

this should have been the first part of the above letter  :)
