Is it possible to combine Unix and NT domain users by using common LDAP authentication server or by some other means? The goal would be creating a user on one system and logging in on another.

More specifically I would like to provide mail for NT domain users from mail server running unix and I don't feel like creating all the users twice (on the NT and on Unix) :-)

Unix allows for a number of methods of authentication users, NT only allows for the use of Microsoft native methods. Well, 2000 is supposed to be able to do Kerboros as I recall, but I don't know any one that's tried to do that. It is possible to set up Samba on the Unix box and let that be the PDC for windows clients. There are some limitations to what Samba can do, but it would allow all accounts to exist only on the Unix system.
