value in <input text field READONLY > cannot accept external variable

Hi!

Score for Test A : <input type=text name=test1 value=$test1 size=3 READONLY><p>

I am trying to pass on a (PHP) variable to be re-display on a form but by setting the value=$var, it still does not take on the value. Could it be an incorrect syntax?

Ideally, the line SHOULD read something like ...
