I got a Acer laptop the TravelMate 730 TVX running Win 98 SE, 64mg of ram & using the power management.  Sometimes when running the laptop off the AC power I go to shut-down windows and the laptop remains running....windows shut down but the computer itself stays running even when I close the lid...............any ideas why ???

Also the only way to get it to power off is to unplug the AC power & pull out the battery.

Won't it shut down if you hold the power buton for seven to ten seconds?
Turn off power management in the bios and let Windows handle it.  Is it hooked up to a network?  Mine shuts down well after issuing a
NET USE * /delete /yes

ACPI bug.  See if Acer has an updated BIOS for it.  Also, you may be able to shut it down by pushing and holding down the power switch for several seconds until it powers off.
Good luck.

Go to programs, accessories, system tools, system infomation...select tools and then choose system configuration. On the sytem configuration page hit the advanced button. Make sure that there is no check mark in the settings for Disable fast shutdown

Is the problem a sparatic thing or does it happen a lot. My lap top (after I've run it really hard) has trouble shutting down sometimes. Also you didn't answer SLINK9. Will the computer shut down after holding the power button for what seems to be way longer than you should ever have too?!!

I guessed that the "tried everything" actually meant what it said.  I guess some people can deal in absolutes and some can't.  Sort of like saying "Everybody hates me."  Everybody doesn't even know you, much less hate you.

It's plain from Staffa's comment, there was no answer here, this will move to PAQ.  I cannot in good faith accept a comment that did not solve the question.
