rather try to put the following in the rc.local file ( if you installed MySQL via RPM and the binaries are where they are supposed to be ie, /usr/bin, then the follwoing will work, use it myself)

/usr/bin/safe_mysqld &

If you built the mysql from binaries, then you change the path to your istallation folder, but keep the safe_mysqld & part...

PS, don't put the # infront of the line! It will comment the command out and it won't execute, but still, rather use the command as per my first comment... I KNOW it will work, whereas, I don't know how your mysql startup script looks in the /etc/rc.d/init.d folder, so rather stick with the command I gave you then we know it will work...

If you exectued "/etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql start" and it didn't work, then something is wrong with your MySQL installation. Look at the /etc/rc.d/init/mysql and see how it tries to start mysqld. Then try that from a command line and find out why it fails and fix that. Off hand, I'd guess that the MySQL shared lib dir might not be listed in /etc/ld.so.conf, or that MySQL isn't installed where the script thinks it should be.

I'd say to delete the question. There hasn't been enough information presented to identify the actual problem.
