I'm trying to repair a HP Deskjet 610C printer, which onced worked perfectly. When I tried to print the Windows' "printer test page", it always either print garbage or eject blank page out. I think it's just the cable problem. But, it's become much more serious problem when I tried to solve it out.

Here's the things I've tried to check both of the printer and the PC up:
- printer self-test.......OK
- another printer cable....not worked
- printing from MS-DOS....it seem to be OK (??)
- reinstalling Win98 and printer driver (the latest version).....nothing changed
- LPT port mode in BIOS.....it's already in SPP mode.
- installing the printer on another machine..... OK

Can anobody idendify the problem and solve it?

Did you check to be sure the cartridges didn't get clogged up?
Run several cleaning cycles and see.
Or if you have new cartridges then replace them.

What does it print like from DOS?

>  Did you check to be sure the cartridges didn't get clogged up?
No, I've tried the printer's self-test serval times and found no problems.

>  What does it print like from DOS?
I've tried "DIR > prn: " command, but the printer's output is not exactly same as the screen. Some of the character missed (somtimes). Is this normal?

Also, more surprising test I've done: The printer denied to print via the printer driver even from NOTEPAD. (What the hell happended !?)

<installing the printer on another machine..... OK>

It worked OK on another computer?

If so then we need to remove all drivers from your computer, and see if a reinstall will work.

OK just to make sure I understood your comment, you installed this printer to another computer and it printed just fine?
Just wanted to make sure there was not a problem with the printer itself.

Did you download the latest driver from HP?
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/software/dj615en.exe.html

Also when you tried the printer on another computer, did you use the same cable or a different one?

How to clean your deskjet 600 series printer:
http://www.officejet-support.com/dj600/supplies.htm

I would normally recommend buying new ink cartridges to try out but in this case I would not recommend this unless you were 100% sure there was not a problem with the printer, the 2 new cartridges will run about $50 to $60, a new printer like this will only run $70 to $90 and comes with new ink cartridges.

Please re-read my original post, rayt333. I've stated all the test I've done.

> same cable or a different one?
I've tried the same cable, but the printer denied to print from win98 on the "problemed" machine. (But, an another didn't. Why?)

<I've stated all the test I've done.>
Sorry, just wanted to make sure I understood you correctly

Also we know the printer does work and the cable is fine.
When you reinstalled Win98 did you format the HD and do a clean install? or simply reinstall over top of itself?

If reinstalled over top of itself, is there a reason you cannot format the HD and do a clean install?
make sure you have backups of all important files.

We are starting to run out of option here, my thinking is there may be a corupted file left in Win98 that isn't getting replaced on a reinstall, if you format then everything will be clean and fresh.

<which onced worked perfectly>
I assume on this computer.

<What's wrong inside this machine>
Could it possible be a bad parallel port? Do you have another printer you can hook up and try to be sure the port is working OK?

If the port is working OK and you say the printer is working OK on another computer, wiith everything you have done then I am at a loss.

Maybe it is jinked?

The another I've just test is deskjet 690C. The printer also represent the same errors when I connected it to the problemed machine. This should be the printer port problem. I'll get an old ISA I/O card to test it again soon.
