What operating system are you using?  What exactly does the error message say?
Have you tried reinstalling illy? Only takes 5 minutes or so.

no, could this change anything?
Of course it could. I know they don't generally put all the updates in the "updates descriptions" but i would give it a try.

From EE Policy:

Advice for Experts on Providing Solutions Through Comments or Answers Experts may post solutions to your question in the form of a comment or answer, so be sure to check every email notification as soon as it arrives.

Often, an Expert posts the solution to your problem as a comment because it is early in the collaboration process and other issues may be involved.

In addition, it is common etiquette in some topics areas to always post comments and not answers. There are several
reasons behind this thinking:

Questions do not become prematurely locked and the collaboration process is not inhibited when the question
is indexed as open for proposed solutions. The question-asker has the power to select the best solution rather than one that is simply suggested as an answer.

Watch out for unclear or multiple-part questions. You can send a comment to the member requesting that they rephrase or break up the question before you submit an answer.

If you don't know the answer, leave the question for someone else.

If you are unsure of your solution, post it as a comment rather than an answer. Members can accept comments as solutions and award points for them. You are only  esponsible for providing one reasonable answer.

Sorry for being to late to answer, but i had some network problems.

the URL you gave me is not working. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/57be.htm

thankx and sorry again.
Are you trying to run both at the same time?
Adobe is not out of the problems...
There is a Demo version of Illustrator 8 that needs a patch... this patch you can dowload it from adobe.com.

This msg "illustrator cannot run" is because the data of the file is out of date.

This patch from Adobe will correct the problem; Photoshop has nothing to see on this, is only an Illustrator problem.
Hello the_nikon, would you please read my post above about using the "Answer Button".

Shall reject and return to Active questions list.

Simply, I think you have entered the wrong serial number, Illustrator still accepts your wrong serial number but can't run
Braveman, be not so brave. MarwaG has been lost in the "answer" button shuffle.

Haven't you, MarwaG?

Peace!

Good news, at least in part.

I had some problems with Photoshop 6 and AI 8 until I updated both with patches.  Photoshop 6.01 here:

Forgot to include what the 6.01 Photoshop update fixed, so here it is:
Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1 Update

The Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1 update fixes several problems discovered after Photoshop 6.0 was released.
Before applying the updater, please reboot your PC.

Significant fixes in the 6.0.1 release include the following:

- The painting tool brush picker has new usability improvements:
* Enter brings up and dismisses the preset picker at the current mouse location.
* Double-clicking a brush in the picker selects the brush and dismisses the picker.
* The current brush is always highlighted in the preset picker.
* The First Brush and Last Brush keyboard shortcuts (> and <) work regardless of whether the current brush exactly
matches a preset brush.
- Image clipping paths in EPS and TIFF files saved from Photoshop 6.0.1 have been modified so that other software, such as QuarkXPress, is able to read them.
- ImageReady is able to save and preview animations under constrained memory conditions.
- There is no slow-down of performance when files in the Open Recent list are unavailable.
- Batch file naming works correctly.
- Export Paths to Illustrator retains path scaling.
- Using certain tools (such as move, marquee, or lasso) after using the Open, Save, and Print commands no longer generates a Program Error dialog.
- Selecting a single color in Color Range now works correctly.
- Online help is accessible for more Web browser configurations.
- New Japanese character map (CMap) files are included to resolve conflicts with ImageStyler 1.0 and PageMaker 6.5.2 Plus.
- Memory usage is better on all Windows operating systems; the network should no longer become unavailable when Photoshop is running.
- Showing and hiding edges for a selection no longer requires pressing Ctrl+H twice.

1. Reboot your PC.
2. Disable all virus protection software.
3. Double-click the Setup.exe file.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Additional notes
This update is intended only for the English version of Adobe Photoshop 6.0. If you have another language version of Adobe Photoshop 6.0, localized versions of the Photoshop 6.0.1 update will be available in the near future. Check your local Adobe Web site for availability.

This updater will only update the retail version of Adobe Photoshop 6.0/ImageReady 3.0 software. It will not update any pre-release (beta) versions. Any problems in updating the applications will be listed in a text file named "patch.err" in the main Adobe Photoshop 6.0 application folder.

To confirm that the update has run successfully, launch Photoshop and verify that the version number on the splash screen shows 6.0.1 and not 6.0. Look at the number in smaller type just below the image. If it does not show 6.0.1, you may not have a retail version. Visit the Adobe Store at http://www.adobe.com/store/, or contact your local Adobe retailer to purchase a retail version.

This update is also available on CD-ROM for US$20.00 plus shipping. In the United States and Canada, call Adobe Customer Service at 1-800-492-3623. Outside the United States and Canada, contact your local Adobe Customer Support for pricing and availability.

Outside the US and Canada, contact your local Adobe Customer Support for availability at http://www.adobe.com/support/intlsupport.html.
