DirectX (Urgent) (0-40 pts)

Hi!

I would like to know which version of DirectX is running on Windows 98 since I suppose DirectX comes with Windows 98.

Then, with the version of DirectX running on my PC, would it be 100% OK to install a game using DirectX 2?  The CD (I suppose) would overwrite the current version of DirectX.  Would it screw up my PC?

Thanks a lot!

directx 6 comes together with win98. If you install a games that require directx 2, you wont have problem palying it, and you dont have to install direct x 2 as well as it has back compability. FIY, if the games tries to install directx 2 it will detect the latest version and abandon the intallation. IF you are intertested the direct x 8.1 is available now.

This is Direct X as I understand it:
Direct X is based on COM ( Component Object Model )

The definition of COM can get technical, but generally
code written in COM does'nt change with later Versions.
There is only extra code added to the COM in later
versions. So games requiring say Version 6 would run
on a Version 8. All later Versions are backward
compatible.

So upgrading to a later Version would only add to the
code of the lesser Version.

Referring to the COM:

From the book "Direct X COMPLETE"
by Michael Root, James Boer

It states:
"it is imperative that this contract ( COM ) remain
unchanged once it has been written"
