I am thinking of setting up a game server (counter strike) on a window 2000 server machine(not running
other service except gaming).

But i am worried about the security aspect of setting up one. Can anyone tell me what are the various
thing that i should perform on my Win2000 server in order to minimise the possiblity of people hacking
into my game server.

-You could minimally use tcp/ip filtering & allow only the tcp ports required... example.. 25,53,110,67,68.. etc..
-Ideally you'd want a hardware firewall like a netscreen-5..

that means i can use tcp/ip filtering to allow only my game port and filter out the rest. Am i right?

well...no... More like the game port ..& others that allow basic functionallity... Like for example if your server is a dhcp client you need 67-68.. How is your server connected ?

How do i secure my machine so that it will not be hack into and in case it got hack, it will not propagate to the other part of my office network. Thank for the advise

-Try it first with only the game ports & 53 [DSN].

Hi Housenet, now i'm confuse about how to setup a CS internet server. I have the game CD for "half life -game of the year edition" and also "counter strike retail version". Which one should i install in order to run my CS internet server. Do i have to use both?
I got to know from server.counter-strike.net that they have a CS server file to download. what is the different between this file and the one from my game CD "hlds.exe"
which one shld i install to run a internet CS server?

-In the intrest of helping you out I offer this site which shows the ports to setup etc (relates to original question).. As per your last question about what to setup first etc, I dont know.
