Wanted: Firewall Recommendations

Hi, ppl.

I just recently got cable internet service installed and working.

#Questions
1. What types of firewalls exist?
2. What are your recommendations?

#Specs
Service: AT$T@Home (DHCP)
Modem: RCA DCM USB/Ethernet modem (using ethernet)
OS: WinME/Win9x

My recommendation would be to use ZoneAlarm

It's free for personal use, and judging by some of the reviews I've seen, is one of the best about. Configuration is pretty simple - if it needs you to make a decision - it asks you.

I tried using Norton's Firewall ( I got it as a free gift) on another machine recently , and it  was a pain in comparsion.  (Maybe I'm just used to ZA?).

I would avoid BlackIce Defender however, I've heard reports that it has problems detecting trojans.

Download a few and try them them out. If you want to see how well they protect your system, try testing them by taking a look at the ShieldsUp and LeakTest  pages at

Got ZoneAlarm.
Did the ShieldsUp and portscan tests.
All Okay.
