does the pagefile has to be as big as the recommended size?

i have 1 GB memory and win 2k says pagefile should be 1.5 GB?!?!?! sounds incredibly huge for no reason?

Pagefiles are required.  If you have that kind of memory, one would assume you also have a lot of disk space.  Microsoft recommends 1.5x RAM... I'd suggest sticking to it.  But if not, adjust it lower, but keep it at least 256MB.  If you start getting memory error messages, then increase its size.  Note, if you want to do a memory dump in the event of a stop message, you should have the pagefile at least RAM + 1 MB.
