Help with DNS management

I would be grateful for some help on this

I have registered a new name (.com) which has a DNS record as shown below the IP is 212.4.208.119

I have another site (my .co.uk web site) with an IP address of 212.4.208.113

I wish to have the new name (.com) show the existing site (.co.uk) when a user enters the address. In short I would like my new doamin name to resolve to the address 212.4.208.113.

I changed this last night as follows, I am not seeing the my existing site thompsoninternet.co.uk when I type in the thompsoninternet.com address. At present all I see is the ISP page UK2.net which is the default page if there is no webspace.

Could somebody take alook at the settings below and let me know if I have done this correctly

Thanks

Derek

www is a CNAME of thompsoninternet.com but is the IP address of thompsoninternet.com

I believe all you need is a line such as

@   IN  A  212.4.208.113

right before the line that starts with the word "mail".

Ofcourse don't forget to change the serial number to refresh and also know that it takes some hours to refresh around the world.

Good Luck,

Tarik

Sorry I am still a bit bemused

Am I wrong in thinking that the thompsoninternet.com IP can be found from the default setting just above the secong $ORIGIN

eg

          IN     A     212.4.208.119
$ORIGIN thompsoninternet.com.

I should also add that this is the message I get when trying to access thompsoninternet.com

Oh Ok I missed that line....

I think it shoud go after the

$ORIGIN thompsoninternet.com.

line

Now regarding the error message you are getting then that is something to do with your webserver and/or file system permission.  I got that once and I think the problem was with setting the permissions on the home directory of the page.  Try giving group and other read access to the directory.

for example

chmod og+rx homedirectory

Good Luck and let me know if I can help further.

I am still strugglng with this

The setup I am using is with a ISP called UK2.net.

All I have access to is a browser screen that enables me to change the nameserver records.

The address now resolves to the ISP home page.

The current state of play my settings are as originally posted, the update only occurs nightly 0300 0400 GMT

I have now just tried to acces the DNS management screen for www.thompsoninternet.com and I get the message

NIC database not yet supported

When trying to access www.thompsoninternet.com, I get a screen saying

Please wait ..

It then refreshes to show the UK2.net homepage

what about putting a HTML or equivalent code to make the redirect to the correct site ?

is it good or a bad idea ?

either solutions should works, but while waiting for the DNS zone change, try this.
