No restart in Windows 98 se

Windows 98 se won't restart or restart in dos mode. Also, I can't start misconfig from Start>Run. It shuts down just fine though. Any ideas? It does the same after wipe and reinstall. Thanks

Take a look at this page, which MIGHT explain the inability to restart in DOS mode.

instead of misconfig
try
msconfig
what error messages on restart or restart in dos?
Here are another couple of pages, both from Microsoft Knowledge Base, that may help with your problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q232/6/57.asp

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q232/9/15.asp
You didn't mention any error messages, but if you get them, could they be the ones mentioned in  this MS KB article:

Have you taken a look at my referenced web pages?  The first Microsoft KB link is about the problem of hanging.

I have tried shutdown patch and disabling fast shutdown. I,ll now try suggestions on web pages supplied by StevenLewis and LeeTutor.
msisco

If the Shutdown Update is installed and it's still not working correctly,

The Fast Shutdown registry key may be enabled.

The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is unchecked in Windows 98 Second Edition, your system may reboot instead of shutting down.

To resolve this issue, backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Shutdown

Right-click on the FastReboot entry, choose modify and type in the number 0.

so did you get msconfig to work?

The fix was to disable irq steering, but now I have no free irq available for Creative SB16 Emulation.
