I tend to prefer the use of a Vector when I want to use something like a dynamic array.  located in java.util.Vector.  It is resizable and versitile (I sound like a salesman)  It returns an object reference to what is stored that can easily be converted to another type.

There are other types of collections that may also be helpful.  It all depends on how you want it to be implemented.

To construct an array all you need to know is the type of the array (primitive or object) and the size. As Java arrays are objects, you construct one with the new operator. For example, to create an array of ints you would code:

    int size = ...
    int[] array = new int[size];

To construct an array of object type, for example String, you would code:

    String[] array = new String[size];

Note that in the preceding example, what you have constructed is simply an array of String references, not the String objects themselves. The individual String objects would have to be created an assigned to the elements of the array. For example, filling the array with Strings that represent the array element index (useless, I know):

    for (int i = 0; i < size; ++i) {
        array[i] = Integer.toString(i);
    }

The Integer.toString method takes an int value and produces a String object that contains the value as a String.
