Can you use bgcolor and background attributes with embedded tables?

When I try the code below, IE shows the background image overlayed with the red cell (you can see both). BUT netscape just shows the background (not any of the red cell).... is there a work around for netscape?

<HTML><BODY>
<TABLE>
<TR>
<TD  background="images/leftBorder.gif"  >
<TABLE><TR><TD bgcolor=red>HELLO</TD></TR></TABLE
</TD>
</TR>
</table>
</BODY>
</HTML>

in netscape nested tables will inherit the background image deeper into the table structure.
The fix for netscape on this is to apply background="" on the nested table elements:

<HTML>
<head>
<title>your title</title>
</head>
<BODY>
<TABLE>
<TR>
<TD background="images/leftBorder.gif">
<TABLE background=""><TR><TD background="" bgcolor=red>HELLO</TD></TR></TABLE
</TD>
</TR>
</table>
</BODY>
</HTML>
