Deleting attachments from imap server

I need to know if it is possible in imap to delete the attachment but keep the message on the imap server.

Basically what I want to do is this.

Download the attachment to my local machine but keep the email on the server for reference.  I don't
want the attachment to stay on the server because it is just a duplicate of what I already downloaded
to my local network and it will quickly fill up unnecessary disk space, not to mention it will slow
the viewing of directories.

Any suggestions??

My reading of RFC 2060 indicates that IMAP doesn't have that capability.  To remove the attachment and retain the message body would require "editing" of the message on the IMAP server. This would be possible with a Unix based IMAP server, but it would require some custom written program that would have to be run on the server.

Anyone have any work arounds/hacks/solutions to this?
I've done a fair bit of web searching, but I don't see anything out there that has this capability. So it looks like you'd have to write your own tool or have someone write it for you.
