proxy parent

I am system admin at a senior high school and I have just set up a RH6.1 machine with squidGuard. This is set up as a proxy server for the students and it is going through another proxy/firewall to the internet. It seems to be really slow though. I have set it up to use the other server as a parent. I think it is trying to finf the web sites directly before going through the parent. Is there a switch that I am supposed to use to tell this machine to go straight through the parent?
Any help will be appreciated.

As long as squid finds there is a direct way to get things it will try them first (it is preferred over parent query)unless you force it not to go direct.  To force it not to go direct and to always go to parent first add the following two lines:

  acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0
  never_direct allow all

Good Luck,
