I have had a dreamweaver problem for 9 months and still cannot resolve.
The page flashpage.co.uk/portalmain.htm has a vast area of plain followed by an important box of detail at the bottom.

I cannot get rid of the plain area, and make the base box adjacent to the text above.
Page was created in DW4 and no matter what I do with cells and embedded tables etc, the problem remains.

Do you realize how many useless table cells you have in there? I just opened up that page and I am a bit surprised.

First, I think your problem is that you made this page in FrontPage.  The code looks like it. Dreamweaver can clean some of that up.

Second, your table is 1685 pixels high.  That's a lot.  And it's way too much for empty space.  When it's that huge, your table contents will spread out to accomodate the height and thus your problem.

Third, your centre table contains many empty cells that do nothing but clutter up your design.

Simple is always best.  Remove those cells, reduce the height and you may have a regular size page.

Good luck,
Dion

OK.. please let me know how it works out..  I realize you may not have made this in FrontPage.. but you have very odd code in their.. looks very different from what MY Dreamweaver puts out..

In any case.. I think if you try out the 2 things I mentioned, you should fix your page.

Thanks,
Dion

I have deleted cells and reduced the 1685 px height but still cannot reduced the size of page, even though all the blank cells are removed.

I am using dw4 in standard and new mode.
I cannot get the page into a normal shape.

Can you either post the code here or give me the address of your updated page?

I'll take a look at it when I get home in about an hour.

Thanks,

i think i've done what u wanted. I've uploaded it to my web space, but it's either taking ages to upload, or it hasn't worked properly. Here's the link anyway. If it's what u want tell me and i'll talk you threw doing it, or u can just copy the page and work on it urself.

Is Stu Robinson the same as Astoller?

In any case, the file you changed is not missing the cells that I asked you to remove.. you have these huge table cells that are 537 pixels high in the middle of your table.

I'm going to make the changes and then you can go see the page (minus graphics) at http:http://www.geocities.com/allostop65/britain.htm

OK?

Good luck!

By the way.. let me give you some advice...

Instead of splitting cells here and there to make divisions - sometimes it's better, simpler and easier to just add a new table inside a cell in another table.

The problem with your page is that there are WAY too many columns and rows and it could be MUCH simpler.  This means many more cells to keep track of and many more heights and widths to keep track of.

You had gotten rid of the 1600 pixel measurement but I found a 537, an 851 and other pixel heights in the hundreds that were in blank cells.

If I were you, I'd remake your page with a simple 3 column page and then cut and paste the text into it.

thanks,
Dion

This is astoller.
I looked at your revamped page and it is good.
Can you tell me how you did it ?

The dw4 manuals and help do not explain this type of work

astoller,

i'm glad you liked it, however, I think I explained what I did in previous posts. even though I recommend redoing the page from scratch - I just removed a lot of extra table cells and changed some cell heights from very big numbers to small numbers....

it's like I said, don't keep splitting existing cells to do layouts.. cause that complicates things... better to add a new table inside another one (this is a general rule for me, not always the case but usually)

and always keep it simple... I think it's just something you'll learn over time
Good luck!

PS hey sturobinson...  sorry you couldn't view my page.. but I think I typed "http" twice.. the link again is http://www.geocities.com/allostop65/britain.htm

Take care all
