A freind of mine has some hardware that when attached to the serial port emits data
is it simple enough for vb to pick up that data?

You can listen to a com port with the MSCOMM control.  It is very easy to use.

Just set the properties to the com port you are using, setup the communication specs (like 9600,8,1,None) or something like this (it will be obvious).

there is an output and an imput event that you can capture into a textbox or a lable.
