The oracle documentation says the following :
ORA-03113 end-of-file on communication channel

Cause: An unexpected end-of-file was processed on the communication channel. The problem could not be handled by the Net8, two task, software. This message could occur if the shadow two-task process associated with a Net8 connect has terminated abnormally, or if there is a physical failure of the interprocess communication vehicle, that is, the network or server machine went down.

Action: If this message occurs during a connection attempt, check the setup files for the appropriate Net8 driver and confirm Net8 software is correctly installed on the server. If the message occurs after a connection is well established, and the error is not due to a physical failure, check if a trace file was generated on the server at failure time. Existence of a trace file may suggest an Oracle internal error that requires the assistance of customer support.

In my experience this has occurred when the database has been brought down but the web server left running. The web server seems to retain a link to the database which is lost when the database was taken down, thus you're trying to connect to a communication chammel that no longer exists.

Have a look at the log files for any error information.
Net8 provide detailed information about the source and context of problems as they arise. This information is generated and stored in log and trace files. The process of logging and tracing error information will help you to diagnose and resolve network problems.

For server and listener, log files are by default located in $ORACLE_HOME/network/log on UNIX and ORACLE_HOME\network\log on Windows platforms, and trace files are by default located in $ORACLE_HOME/network/trace on UNIX and ORACLE_HOME\network\trace on Windows platforms. For client, log and trace files are by default located in the current working directory.

Hi !

Thanks much, found the log files and did find some error messages. Are there anything specific I have to look out for? Any suggestion on how to correct the prelimnary erros or any pointers on hoe to read these log?

It says in sqlnet.log

Fatal NI connect error 12537, connecting to:
 (DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)))

In listerner.log it says

Listening on
:
:
No longer listening on ..

Any suggestions on how to correct these errors. But there are no trace files in $ORACLE_HOME/network/trace.

Thanks
Raji

you should try restarting the database and web server, ensure that all listeners are running and try again.
