Burner Will Not Read 700 MB Disks

My CD Burner, LG CED-8081B, will not read 700MB disks, instead it reads them as 650 MB disks. I've tried two different types of media, Pacific Digital and Acer Gold disks but both seem to have the same problem. I'm using Windows ME if that helps.

Try upgrading your software, or your drive's firmware.  Check www.lgservice.com for firmware update information.

It could be that your burner is not capable of this.
How old is it ?
DOes it say that it can read these in the manual ?

Have you tried a CD cleaner  for your drive ?

I hope this helps !

Adaptec' Easy CD Creator below Version 4.02 do NOT support CDRs of more than 650MB. The solution is to update your software to a more recent version:

I have Version 4.02 and it does support 700MB disks. There is a note in the Read Me File, Section 3.7, Working with 80 minute CDs:
Easy CD Creator supports 80 minute CDs. If you are recording to an 80 minute CD and would like the ECDC layout screen to reflect this, double click in the estimated time area in the ECDC 4 Status bar and select
"Estimate Based on 80 minute CD".
So update to at least 4.02, enable 80 support as above and go for it...Good luck...T
Many players will also have limits.  If you are lucky, an upgrade of your burning software will help.  Roxio has taken over Adaptecs CD Creator software.  I recommend this if you have been using an earlier version of software.  Even with what you have you may see that it is 650Mb but when you record it usually will turn out ok as it will show the time remaining.
Also take a look at Nero -
30  day trial at

www.nero.com
remember to uninstall any previous burner software and drivers.

I hope this helps !

Well I'm sure it's not a software issue because I have burned 700 MB CD's in the past. I've used many different types of software, from Adaptec to CloneCD to DiscJuggler but none seem to work. It might be a hardware issue more then a software. The burner is fairly new I bought it around the end of 2000. And it's an 8x4X32x burner if that helps. If it is a major hardware problem then I should just contact LG.
I would remove all but one Birner software, since there are some known conflicts.

Next clean the drive with a cleaning CD.

If this does not help, contact the manufacturer for warantee info.

I hope this helps !
You might be in error in saying that you have burned bigger disks before.  It is a fact, as already stated above, that CD burners are not forward compatible with disks that were not available when they were originally manufactured.  The company that built your CD burner can tell you what the max size of disk it can burn is.  I have a HP burner that looks like it was bought yesterday, yet it is a few years old and can not burn an 80 minute disk no matter what I update.
It is somewhat unusual that an 8x rated drive won't burn 700MB discs, but its certainly possible.  Does this occur with multiple brands of media?  Neither Acer Gold or Pacific Digital are very good brands, buy a few TDK or Sony discs and see if those work.  As asked above, does the manual say it supports 700MB media?

You said you burned 700MB before, was it with this drive then suddenly it won't do it any more?
